West Whitlock Recreation Area
About
West Whitlock Recreation Area, located 18 miles west of Gettysburg, South Dakota, off US Highway 212, is a South Dakota state park that offers camping, fishing, boating, swimming, hiking and other outdoor recreational activities along Lake Oahe Reservoir. The park features over 100 campsites with electric hookups, two sleeper cabins, a beach, boat launch, fish cleaning station, and rental equipment including canoes, kayaks, and paddleboards. Named after Mrs. J.F. Whitlock whose pioneering family once owned the land, the area was historically a popular campsite for the Arikara and Mandan people and later the site of Whitlock Crossing, a settlement that operated a ferry across the river.
