LaFramboise Island Nature Area
About
LaFramboise Island Nature Area is a 345-acre nature preserve located on an island in the Missouri River in Pierre, South Dakota’s capital city. Established in 2002, the area offers hiking and biking trails, fishing, boating, and picnicking opportunities across cottonwood forests, wetlands, and prairie, while serving as critical habitat for over 100 bald eagles during winter months and other diverse wildlife species. Named for Joseph LaFramboise, a fur trader who established a post here in the 1800s, the island holds historical significance dating back to the 1804 Lewis and Clark Expedition.
