Fort Meade Recreation Area is a 6,700-acre public lands recreation area managed by the U.S. Department of Interior’s Bureau of Land Management, located east of Sturgis, South Dakota. The area encompasses forests and grasslands and provides diverse recreational opportunities including camping, hiking, biking on the Centennial Trail, fishing, horseback riding, and hunting, along with two fee-based campgrounds at Alkali Creek Trailhead and Alkali Creek Horsecamp. The recreation area preserves the historical legacy of the former Fort Meade Military Reservation established in 1878 by the Seventh Cavalry, offering visitors access to the Fort Meade Cavalry Post, Old Fort Meade Museum, and the Fort Meade Post Cemetery.
